(July 8, 2009) On July 2, 2009, Brazil issued Law No. 11,961, granting amnesty to immigrants who currently are in an irregular or illegal situation and who entered the country before February 1, 2009. The immigrant may request temporary residence within 180 days from the publication of the law; the provision will be valid for two years. Ninety days prior to the expiration of the temporary residence and provided that the immigrant complies with the requirements listed in article 4 of Decree No. 6,893 of July 2, 2009, that regulates Law No. 11,961, the person may apply for permanent residency.
Immigrants who have been expelled from or who, according to the law, present any sort of danger to the country may not apply for the temporary residence permit.
